The "Canticle of Brother Sun", also known as the "Canticle of the Creatures", is one of the first expressions of the emerging Italian language.
Composed by Saint Francis shortly before his death during his stay at San Damiano, where Saint Clare founded her order, it is a touching ode to the life and beauty of Creation, which flows from the heart of the saint with astonishing clarity.
The Canticle praises the four elements: Fire, Air, Water and Earth, the essential components of every form of life, including that of humans, in keeping with medieval beliefs.
It is a prayer infused with a vision of Nature as beautiful and beneficial, reflecting the image of its Creator.
Francis decided to compose the prayer after retreating from life.
His broken body was ravaged by suffering.
Blind, in a dark and silent world, Francis did not however pay attention only to his illness.
Through sheer willpower he had the strength to carry on seeing the splendour of creation and to express gratitude for the gift of a beautiful world.
Hip choice to write the Canticle in the vernacular was due to his pressing desire to be close and understandable to the poor, through whom he experienced his closeness with Christ.
